Using an extensible application architecture

All PC users have sometimes encountered the problem that the computer begins to slow down. But do not panic and immediately run to the store for a new device. After all, you can optimize your old computer yourself.

First, you need to remove all unnecessary programs. Very often on new computers a lot of pre-installed programs that are not used at all. Programs can load themselves when you turn on your PC, work unnoticed, thereby slowing down your computer.

To remove unnecessary software, go to the “Start” menu. Then click “Control Panel” and “Programs” – “Uninstall programs”. You need to be very careful not to uninstall the system program, which ensures the correct operation of the software. If you have difficulty identifying unnecessary programs, you can use the utility PC Decrapifier, which will find unnecessary software.

The next step in speeding up your old PC will be to clear the autoloads list. To do this, click on the “Start” button and enter msconfig in the search bar. The “Autoloads” tab will appear, where the checkboxes are marked with programs that automatically start when you turn on your computer. Uncheck all unnecessary programs.

Temporary files that soon become permanent reduce the speed of your computer. Therefore, they should be periodically deleted. Open “My Computer” and go to the section with the operating system (usually C:\). Select the Windows folder, then the Temp folder and delete all files, then clear the Recycle Bin.

The next step is the software part. If you want to speed up your old computer, Windows 7 “initial” edition is what you need with a weak PC. It lacks many extra features and does not require high processing power. But that’s just in case your PC is completely weak. And be very careful about networking. If your device allows you to install “10”, it will be ideal. After all, Windows 10 can speed up your old computer better than “seven”. And it’s more secure. But you should choose one with an early service pack.

After you’ve installed Windows and entered “Name” and “Password”, you’ll be prompted to select the default OS settings. But you have to select “Setup³” and disable all Windows services. These services do not affect the stability of the OS.

Another important step to speed up your PC is to install quality drivers. Ideally, you should install them from the original disk or from the manufacturer’s website. It is not recommended to use Driverpack Solution or similar programs to search for drivers. By installing quality drivers, the system will work stably. Many pros advise installing them in this sequence:

motherboard chipset drivers;
video card drivers;
Other drivers.

Another reason for slow PC operation may be a hard drive load of more than 85%. If this is the case, we advise you to install a SSD or HDD.

All PC users know that public enemy number 1 is a virus. And enemy number 2 is dust. The large amount of dust can overheat and cause the computer elements to malfunction. Cleaning should be done in half an hour after turning off the device, and not in synthetic clothes, as a static charge may occur. You can use a vacuum cleaner with minimum power. Pay special attention to the video card and CPU cooler and the power supply.

On July 14, after five months in beta, ChromeOS Flex was officially released – which, to recap, is a special optimized version of ChromeOS (incidentally, its name is now spelled together without a space between Chrome and OS), designed primarily for companies and educational institutions and designed to run on older Windows and Mac PCs.

In 2020, Google bought developer CloudReady Google released ChromeOS Flex, the second life of old PCs and Macs and it was this agreement that gave birth to ChromeOS Flex. It’s also telling that Google launched ChromeOS Flex less than a year after the release of Windows 11 – overly high hardware requirements and poor communication left millions of older PCs without an up-to-date OS. And Google did so after Microsoft failed with a lightweight version of Windows with the prefix 10X, which was finally canceled and disassembled into components. ChromeOS Flex has been offered in early access since February, and now a stable build has been released for a wide range of users. The developers of ChromeOS Flex have fixed 600 different bugs during testing.

Google says ChromeOS Flex can be installed in minutes and promises that the OS can work properly on devices of advanced age (up to 13 years old). In fact, almost 400 devices have already been certified, which can work with Flex without problems. The official list of supported devices is dominated by Windows PCs from Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, LG, Toshiba and other OEMs, but it also includes some older Macs, including 10-year-old MacBook models. To install the OS, download the image from the official site and transfer it to a bootable USB flash drive.

Google guarantees Flex support through 2030 on most compatible devices, with only a few devices no longer supported in 2022 or 2023.

Minor bugs, stability or loading issues can occur on officially unsupported devices.

Google separately notes the great potential of ChromeOS Flex for enterprise use. Nordic Choice Hotels, one of Scandinavia’s largest hoteliers, was recently the victim of a ransomware attack and with Flex the administration managed to restore the functionality of at least 2000 computers in 48 hours.

ChromeOS Flex looks and works exactly like a regular Chrome OS on any Chromebook – they share the same code base and development cycles. However, be sure to keep in mind that there are some components that ChromeOS Flex either can’t work with or Google hasn’t tested compatibility with, particularly fingerprint readers, optical drives, IR webcams, proprietary connectors, stylus input and Thunderbolt capabilities. There may also be problems with some features, even on certified models, such as Bluetooth, touchscreens, screen rotation, function keys, key combinations and SD card readers.

So the bottom line is that Chromebooks have certainly proved to the world that there is a powerful alternative to Windows, especially in education, where Chromebooks have historically excelled through a combination of affordability and Google services. So, Chrome OS Flex is another alternative to Windows. And a pretty good one, given the very modest hardware requirements.

Comparison of Windows and Linux operating systems

An operating system is software with a set of programs that manage PC resources and organize the user’s work, provide the main functions of the computer (task scheduling, memory and resource management, networking, etc.).

The most used operating systems are Windows and Linux.

Windows is a licensed operating system developed by Microsoft with closed source code. The world first saw this operating system in 1985. It was based on the MS-DOS kernel. Over time, many different improved versions of Windows have appeared, but the architecture of the kernel has not changed much.

The Linux operating system was created by the programmer Linus Torvalds in 1991. The Unix family of similar operating systems that run on the Linux kernel. This OS uses a monolithic kernel with elements of modular architecture to improve performance. This allows users to actively download and upload data.

Which operating system should I choose? Let’s compare Windows and Linux.

Windows operating system is simple and straightforward for any consumer, so it is well suited for home use. Windows is installed on about 87% of the PCs worldwide while Linux is installed on only 2%. This low popularity of Linux is due to its complexity. The main area of use for Linux is server software.

Let us compare the main criteria:

1. Kernel.
Windows uses a micro-kernel which gives low system performance and takes up little space. Linux has a monolithic kernel which guarantees the quality of the system but consumes a lot of resources.

2. File system.
In Windows, all files have their place in directories (folders) on special drives (C:\, D:\, E:\, etc.). Files and folders in Linux have a tree structure. Even external devices can be referred to as files. For example, directories are files; mouse, keyboard are files; files are files.

3. Usability.
Because of the high popularity of Windows, users are so used to their favorite programs that it is already difficult for them to change anything. But Linux has improved a lot lately and it is much more comfortable to use. Linux Mint and Ubuntu are the easiest to use.

4. Security.
The popularity of Windows means that most viruses are created for it. And since this operating system was not originally designed for networked PCs and has no built-in security features, viruses can easily gain access to system files. That is why Microsoft releases security patches and updates once a month.

Linux has a very good level of anti-virus protection. The kernel is open source and the system is controlled by developers from all over the world. Any security problem is solved within a few hours with the patch received. Most IT professionals choose Linux precisely because of its high level of security.

5. Privacy.
Not so long ago, Windows started to spy on its users: it monitors the keystrokes of the keyboard, the sites visited, listens to voice messages, and collects all sorts of information. Where this information goes after that is classified. Linux users can be at ease in this respect. Their operating system does not spy on them. The system allows the encryption of the embedded disks.

6. Reliability.
Windows needs to be rebooted often. If there is a failure or slowdown, the PC hangs up, you install a program, uninstall a program, update Windows, etc., you have to reboot the system. With Linux you do not have to do this very often. The operating system will work for a longer period of time.

7. Games.
Windows is perfect for gamers. Compatibility with software is assured here. Linux is still in the process of development.

8. Programming.
Linux offers a full range of programming applications and supports almost all programming languages (Python, C/C++, Java, Ruby, Perl). Therefore, this operating system is preferred by developers worldwide. Windows is almost not suitable for programming.

Windows operating system is very simple, logical and ideal for home use as well as for gamers. Linux is often used by large organizations because it gives good speed and security. Both operating systems are good and suitable for specific user requirements.

Windows won't boot

Often Windows users have a problem during the boot process (program crash). There may be several reasons for this:

Hardware that has low fault tolerance;
Computer is shut down incorrectly;
A deleted system file by mistake;
a hard disk on which a failed area has occurred;
viruses and others.

The very first thing to do when Windows crashes is to restart the computer or de-energize it. It will also be effective to disconnect the mouse, printer, keyboard, etc., and connect them one by one. This will help to rule out the problem exactly in the external equipment.

If, on the other hand, an error message appears on the screen, you need to analyze the text.
The message “BOOTMGR is missing” signals that the operating system boot loader is damaged or missing. You need to install the Windows disk by downloading the image from the official site. But here it is necessary to enter the product key.

You can use the Microsoft Windows and Office ISO Download Tool. You will not need to install it. Just download and run it. After start-up the message will appear (click “No”). Select the desired version of Windows, the language, and click “Download. Using the program Microsoft Windows USB / DVD Download Tool is recommended to write the image to a flash drive. After that restart your computer and press one of the keys ESC, F6, F2 (depending on your device). It is needed to open BIOS. After starting BIOS in the “Boot device priority” section use “+” or “PgUp” buttons to select booting to the flash drive, from which you then install Windows and press “Restore system”. From the list of operations choose the bottom one and “Next”. The “System Restore Options” window appears. We need either “System Restore System Startup” (to automatically fix the OS startup problem) or “Command Line” (if the first option fails). When “Command Line” is loaded, type “bootrec /rebuildbcd” and “Enter”. Agree to make changes to the boot configuration data and press “Y” and “Enter” in turn. Using the command “Bootrec /FixBoot” create a new boot sector – restart the computer.

The message “No bootable device”, “No Boot device found”, “Invalid boot device”, “Non system disk or disk error” indicates that the device failed to start the OS and could not find the boot sector or hard disk. You need to enter the “Boot device priority” section in BIOS. In case the hard disk drive is invisible, the problem lies in the hardware (power cable or hard disk cable got loose, or the hard disk drive is broken). If the hard disc is normally detected by the computer, the reason may be the boot record (MBR). It is either missing or damaged. You will need to boot from an installation flash (disk) and run the bootrec /fixmbr command.

If a message called “Blue Screen of Death” appears on the screen, it means that updates are installed incorrectly, the RAM is not working properly, or system files are missing. These messages may appear after a driver update and the contents will look like this: “DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL” and the file name.

Many users have the question “How to boot in safe Windows mode?”. To do that, press the F8 button. In the menu that appears, select “Safe Mode”. This will help fix the failure. After the safe boot of Windows, select “Device Manager” and remove the problem driver. If after the manipulation “Blue Screen of Death” has not disappeared, you need to return to the driver version with which there was no problem. To do this, press F8 and select “Computer Troubleshooting” when the operating system is loaded. In the “Recovery Options” menu, click on “System Restore” and select a restore point.

A common problem is the lack of drivers with a SYS extension. You can find them on the installation disk or a flash drive by inserting it into another computer, or you can use Kaspersky Rescue Disk, a computer repair program.

If you have tried all possible options for fixing the crash on your PC and nothing has worked, then you need to check if the hard drive is working. You can do this with the MHDD program, which is run from a bootable flash drive. In the menu of the program from the list choose the channel with the hard disk connected to the OS and specify its number. Here you can see S.M.A.R.T. data, “medical card” of hard disk drive (F8), make scan for errors (F4).

Often “Blue Screen of Death” appears due to problems with RAM.

If you have a failure in your computer and after trying all possible ways to fix it yourself, you have not succeeded, it is better to contact a specialist who will save your device.
